Students Who Don't Have the Internet? Look Out Here Comes Google!

Many questions have arisen regarding students not having or having limited access to the Internet.  The following is an article in the U.S.A. Today regarding Google's efforts to close the gap for communities.

USA Today - Google's New Internet and Cable Service

"Google will also offer a slower Internet option, at a DSL-like 5 megabits per second, with no monthly fee to households that pay a $300 installation fee. The free service is guaranteed for at least seven years, but is available only in neighborhoods where enough people have pre-registered."

Flip School: How Do You Get Buy In?

This summer, as I speak to educators across the globe, I get the same question.  How do you flip an entire staff?  I feel that many of us pioneers are trying to convince others by our sheer enthusiasm about technology and passion for change.  Remember, those around us may not be as motivated or excited about things as we are.  I feel the real key for us is to show them the significant advantages it has for them.  If you want a teacher to do a screen capture, what are their immediate advantages of doing more work? We are all self-centered, therefore, lets put innovation in it.  By shifting the thought process from others to them personally benefiting finally your staff has personal motivation to change.   Talk to any successful salesman that is the key.  SALES 101!

That is how I feel you create change in a school.   Everyone will have a different point of view based on their experiences principals, teachers, students etc.  You have to know your audience.  Simply put...  if you are selling a teacher on flipping their classroom or integrating technology,  what are their  for them and not necessarily their students?

Four Things That Make Up The Flipped School

There are four key components that make up a flipped school:

  • First, students need to be emotionally healthy and safe.
  • Students need to be able to have access to technology and teachers need to use it effectively
  • Spaces, equipment and classroom furniture need to promote collaboration and effective messaging
  • Pedagogy needs to be based on research based practices

Now That We Have Flipped, Now What?

Oh boy, the lessons that we have learned this year.  It has been ONE YEAR since we flipped our entire school.  THANK YOU TECHSMITH! In that one year, we have finally realized that there is one basic underlying issue on why students do not progress and teachers do not adjust their in our classroom practices.  In most cases,  both have nothing to do with their effort.  IT'S TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just as we have flipped our classrooms, we have to flip our resources for our teachers to really move it.  More later...
